‘Mr Whisper?’

‘Mr Whisper. That’s what the kids used to call Theodore. Staff as well.’

Lana suddenly tasted the sour, sweaty skin of his ankle.

‘Are you all right?’ Miss McColgan’s features were uneasy. ‘Looks like you need this more than me.’ She rose from her seat.

‘I’m fine. Really. Are you sure about this name?’

‘Theo had thyroid surgery when he was a kid. You could barely hear what he said. That’s how he got so close to people. Had to whisper in their ears. Think it got him the sympathy vote. Not from me, though. Always thought there was something unnerving about him.’

Lana had assumed Mr Whisper was a moniker Cooper had given him. Had Lane Hewett used his own nickname? She’d tried to establish the details of her son’s conversation through the fence, but Cooper had been too young to give her any clear answers. He’d just shrugged his shoulders and told her he didn’t really remember.

‘Mr Whisper?’

Miss McColgan nodded irritably.

How far was Hasbland High from Jaxton, and had he really travelled that far to target Cooper? And why Cooper?

‘Are you really from a TV show?’ Miss McColgan asked dubiously.

Lana absently shook her head. ‘Thanks for your time.’

She turned and left the office. Theodore Lane Hewett. A name to the face that had haunted her since he’d escaped from the back lane. It had to be him, and he was still alive, rotting in a prison cell for the murder of three girls.

‘You’re welcome,’ Miss McColgan called acerbically after her.

But if he was convicted in 2013, he couldn’t have tried to snatch Cooper. She was back in the corridor and descending the steps.

She had to find out if he was still locked up.

Todd still hadn’t responded to her message. She had to speak to him.

Downstairs, Lana supported herself against the wall at the bottom of the steps and tried to slow the surge of blood thrumming in her head.
